John Henry, hero of a widely sung U.S. black folk ballad. It describes his contest with a steam drill, in which John Henry crushed more rock than did the machine but died “with his hammer in his hand.” Writers and artists see in John Henry a symbol of man’s foredoomed struggle against the machine. John Henry was a steel driver, a man who used a sledge hammer to pound steel drills to make holes in rock. In tunnel boring the rock was blasted away by explosives packed into drilled holes.

Another scholar, John Garst, argues that the John Henry of the Virginia Penitentiary is an unlikely candidate for a faster-than-machine steel-driving man. First of all, prison records show that the man was only 5'1" tall. In addition, says Garst, interviews collected during the s and s point to a site further south in Alabama for the. 27 works of John Henry Newman Important figure in the religious history of England in the 19th century () This ebook presents a collection of 27 works of John Henry Newman. John Henry is a fantastic song of a great African-American hero. While the prose of Julius Lester sings, it isn't the lyrics to the song, so it didn't really meet my needs.

It does however read aloud with majesty and grace. I am keeping it for my daughter to enjoy as a bedtime story/5(63). With regard to Julius Lester's John Henry, it is in particular illustrator Jerry Pinkney's Caldecott Honour winning accompanying illustrations which I have always found (and ever since first reading the book as a library copy a couple of years ago) very much personally and visually impressive (expressive). For although Pinkney's pictorial renderings are at times perhaps almost a /5.

The legend of John Henry has been celebrated in song and story for generations, but my favorite version is the children's picture book John Henry by Julius Lester, with illustrations by Jerry Pinkney. Julius Lester's John Henry is based on the African American folk ballad "John Henry," the tale of John Henry, the steel-driving man who was bigger and stronger than anyone and the competition.

Tells the factual story of John Henry well, but I was expecting something a little more from Ezra Jack Keats, whose books about African American boys in the city have been with me for 40 years and now enchant my son.

This is a good book for a person with normal politics -I just wanted something more militant re the politics surrounding John Cited by: Looking for books by John Henry. John Henry said to his captain: “A man ain’t nothin’ but a man, And before I’ll let your steam drill beat me down, I’ll die with my hammer in my hand.” The John Henry ballads probably originated as work songs for steel-drivers and other rail workers in the s, and became more generalized as chain gang, worker, and prison songs.
